Did you know that Fort Montagu is the oldest existing fort on the island of New Providence? July 2014 will make this fort 272 years old. It was completed in1742 by Peter Henry Bruce and 34 years later was raided by American soldiers in an assault known as The Raid of Nassau during the American war for independence. These soldiers would later become the first marines in the United States Navy. They arrived at the fort unopposed as the British were aware of their movements and moved most of the gun powder and munitions the night before. Fort montagu is located at the eastern end of Nassau at the entrance to the harbour, it has been restored and is now open to the public.
